Fire klosser i en antikvitetssjappe

NooA kom til meg i en forfallen, amerikansk antikvitetssjappe i mai 2012. Der, mellom bruksgjenstander, barndomsminner, antikviteter, og skrot, åpenbarte det seg fire treklosser som klart og tydelig forkynte det fargerike ordet:

Etter å ha vist klossene til bartendere og servitører fra flere land, forsto jeg at navnet var lett å huske og uttale på mange språk.

Klar for nye utfordringer, bestemte jeg meg for å etablere Campus NooA som et internasjonalt storsenter for nettkurs. Jeg ville starte en egen nettskole basert på min lange erfaring som utviklingsleder for NKIs nettskole, mitt store internasjonale nettverk og min teori om kooperativ frihet og transparens i nettbasert utdanning. NooA AS ble dermed etablert, varemerket Campus NooA opprettet og domenenavnet NooA registrert i åtte språkområder. De første lærerne og studentene ble innrullert i årets siste kvartal.

NooA trengte en læringsplattform, og etter å ha studert det internasjonale Moodle miljøet, deltatt på Moodle konferanser, møtt flere Moodle partnere og tatt Moodle Course Creator Certificate, er jeg ikke i tvil om at Moodle er det rette valget for NooA. Versjon 2,3 tilfredsstiller de fleste av våre behov og vi kan benytte oss av et imponerende internasjonalt nettverk for å utvikle tjenester som støtter opp om våre spesielle mål og teorier om kooperativ frihet i nettbasert utdanning.

Misjon, mål og kjerneverdier

NooAs misjon er å tilby fleksibel nettbasert utdanning med høy kvalitet, varig verdi og synlige spor.

NooAs mål er å bli et internasjonalt storsenter for nettkurs som:

1. er en attraktiv partner for mennesker og virksomheter som vil lage, oversette og selge nettkurs
2. gir kursdeltakerne stor fleksibilitet og mye læring for pengene
3. er akkreditert i flere land
4. rekrutterer studenter i mange land
5. leverer kurs på flere språk
6. er blant Nordens største leverandører av nettkurs

Med denne målsettingen ønsker NooA også å hjelpe norske institusjoner til å levere sine nettkurs i utlandet og til å gjøre flere utenlandske nettkurs tilgjengelige på norsk.

Skolen er bygget opp rundt den nyeste versjonen av læringsplattformen Moodle. Dette er en av verdens ledende læringsplattformer med svært mange installasjoner. På nettsidene sine hevder de å ha over 70.000 registrerte installasjoner i mer enn 200 land. Moodle er valgt av mange ledende nettskoler som for eksempel Open University i England, Athabasca University i Canada og Universidade Aberta i Portugal. Systemet ser også ut til å være på frammarsj i Skandinavia og står for eksempel sterkt i den danske universitetssektoren.

Campus NooA har inngått samarbeid med eFaktor om teknisk drift, support og utvikling. E-faktor har i flere år levert tilsvarende tjenester til mange betydelige norske kursleverandører, og jeg mener eFaktor er Norges desidert mest kompetente selskapet på denne læringsplattformen.

Organisering og nøkkelpersoner

Vi har knyttet til oss et nettverk av kompetente eksperter og partnere som vil bidra til utvikling, drift og kvalitetssikring gjennom NooAs International Advisory Board, Internasjonale partnere og Kvalitetsråd. Medlemmene er presentert på våre nettsider.

NooAs internasjonale partnere er våre representanter i de språkområdene Campus NooA utvikler og tilbyr kurs og studier. Partnerne skal bidra til å hjelpe norske leverandører av nettkurs inn på nye markeder. De skal oversette og tilpasse kurs, markedsføre dem og følge opp lærere og studenter i sitt språkområde. De skal også bidra til å gjøre flere gode nettkurs tilgjengelige i Norge.

NooA har etablert et International Advisory Board som skal bestå av eksperter innen utdanning i kombinasjon med fagområder som miljøvern, kunst, litteratur, teknologi, sosiale medier, sosialt entreprenørskap, hjelpearbeid og andre ideelle formål. Medlemmene skal bistå Campus NooA med råd med bakgrunn i sine fagområder, miljøer og kulturer.

Campus NooA har også etablert et eget kvalitetsråd. Rådets mandat er å følge opp og sette fokus på kvalitet i alle ledd. Medlemmene er valgt med tanke på å gi rådet omfattende og kompletterende kompetanse innen kvalitet i nettbasert utdanning.

NooAs innholdspartnere er institusjoner, bedrifter og enkeltmennesker som leverer nettkurs i samarbeid med NooA. Vi samarbeider med mindre skandinaviske leverandører av nettkurs som ønsker hjelp til å videreutvikle tilbudene sine, oversette dem til norsk og nå ut til et større marked. Vi har allerede underskrevet avtaler om 30 kurs og er interessert i flere slike samarbeidsavtaler.

Betingelser: Du må gjennomføre nettkurset " Sertificate  in Online Teaching " der du lærer nettpedagogikk og får hjelp til å utvikle dine egne nettkurs.

Arbeidsoppgaver: Du skal lage, markedsføre og undervise dine egne nettkurs. Du skal bidra til  at NooAs lærere og kursutviklere gjør suksess og bistå dem om de vil oversette dine kurs til andre språk.

Lønn: Inntil 50 % av det deltakerne betaler for nettkursene dine.

Campus NooA

NooA was named during a pit stop at an Up State New York antique shop. There, among artifacts, antiquities, junk and childhood treasures, suddenly appeared some wooden alphabet blocks that load and clear spelled out the colorful word NooA. Showing the blocks to people from various countries, I realized that they could easily pronounce and remember the word, since most of them associated it with Noah's Ark.

This happening established NooA as an acronym for the Nordic online Academy and provided the first idea of using blocks for NooA’s design elements.

I established Campus NooA in 2012 after 25 years with online education work. During these years I was central in developing NKI Nettstudier to Scandinavia's largest provider of online education and I also learned a lot about online education from my association with Athabasca University in Canada and Universidade Aberta in Portugal.

I now want to use these experiences together with the networks I have developed through EDEN and many European projects to establish NooA as an international learning mall for online courses. Since I started working with online education in 1985, I have also gradually developed the Theory of Cooperative Freedom and Transparency in Online Education. My experiences and theories from these years are therefore central for NooA’s foundation, visions, values and aims.

I hope you will enjoy our services and welcome you to test out some of them in our Mall.

Greek Nights with ICICTE and Papandreou

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the International Conference on Information Communication Technologies ICICTE at the fashionable Rhodes Palace Hotel in Greece. The EDEN Excecutive Committee was well presented with a presentation by Airina Volungeviciene and the most important Steering Committe and Garden Party support by Costas Tsolakidis. Here are some of my reflections and highlights from the conference which supplement my Greek thoughts from our EDEN conference in Athens last October.

Interesting Meeting with George Papandreou

Papandreou delivers his speach

Former Greek Prime Minister and current President of Socialist International George Papandreou was honored with an ICICTE award for his contributions in the field of education. A video of Mr. Papandreou's conference speech and the full text of it is available at the conference website.

During the conference dinner I had the pleasure of discussing several  technology and education issues with him, and I was really impressed by his broad overview and in-depth knowledge of our field. I also noted that he used his Ipad actively for note taking during the conference.

The Steering Committe chaired by Dr. Chris Barlow and over one hundred participants from more than thirty countries could choose between about eighty presentations. The respective conference papers are available from the conference web-site.

Russel Stannard gave an excellent keynote titled Feedback using Screen Capture in which he focused on his experiences with Jing and www.teachertrainingvideos.com - a website dedicated to helping teachers incorporate ICT into their teaching with step by step videos. Jing is a free software that captures anything  you see and hear on your computer as an image or short video, and allows you to store and share it on the web.

It was an honor for me to give a keynote presentation at the conference and my PowerPoint presentation is embedded below. As a keynote presenter I also received one of the remarkably etched and painted metal artworks created for the conference by the Danish artist Marie Louise Kold who also attended as the conference photograph.

The Graduate Student Award

I was invited to be on the panel for the conference Graduate Student Award, and this year's award winner was Marcia J. P. Lindqvist, Ph.D. Candidate at the Department of Education at Umeå University in Sweden. Her paper was titled Teachers' Expectations Regarding Possibilities and Challenges of Learning Practices and Processes in Two Schools in a 1:1 Computer Initiative.

Posters

Lorraine McGinty from University College Dublin in Ireland was honored with the best poster award for her presentation: Providing Needs-focused Curricular Reform during a Recession. Since I often promote transparency in online education, I also appreciated Ralph Springett's presentation of Review IT! which is a learner-led course evaluation tool that provides access to advice from students on what to expect from their courses.

Conference Friends

An interesting ICICTE conference feature is the honoring of Conference Friends. This year Katherine McGuire was recognized for her contribution of time and expertise to help ICICTE move forward. She is a Senior Instructor of Psychology at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, Canada.

Social Highlights

Finally, Conference Director Nancy Pyrini and her team of most hospital Greek hosts topped the conference with an excellent social program including a guided tour and a Greek night in the old town of Rhodes and the boat trip to the beautiful village of Lindos.

New job opportunities

Dear colleagues and friends,

I have sent a letter of resignation to NKI, which means that I will end my work at NKI Nettstudier September 30th. Now, my ambitions are to use my competency and network to build an international education- and consultancy operation.

This has been a difficult decision. I’m really thankful for NKI’s longstanding support of my professional development which has made it possible for me to become professor of online education and president of EDEN. However, NKI is now in a tough transformation process with new opportunities and challenges. The prevailing targets and the methods of accomplishing them are making it increasingly difficult for me to feel that I’m contributing sufficiently.

I'm extremely proud of our achievements during the 25 years that have passed since I thought NKI’s first online, distance education course. You know that I care a lot about transparent and cooperative online education, especially the unique opportunities it gives to all the devoted online students and teachers. It's heartwarming to think about our individual planning system, the response and quality barometers, the learning partner services, the global student profiles and all the other innovative online education services we have pioneered. I like to think that this has been of great benefit for the 55.000 online students we have enrolled in nearly 200.000 courses since 1987.

I'm convinced that the future is bright for online education, and I hope that NKI will continue its impressive progress for 25 more years. I wish success and happiness - to all my dear friends and colleagues at NKI Nettstudier. I will miss you, and everything we have achieved together.

I believe that opportunities multiply when we look for them. Now, I look forward to build my new education- and consultancy operation and to work with my good Norwegian and international colleagues in further pursuit of quality, development and innovation in distance and online education.

EDEN's Best Research Paper Award

EDEN's Best Research Paper Award is granted yearly during the Annual Conference Dinner. The Award is presented in collaboration with the Ulrich Bernath Foundation for Research in Open and Distance Learning, with the support of a distinguished Jury.

This year, former President of EDEN Ingeborg Bø chaired the jury and presented the Best Paper Award at the conference dinner on June 8th.  

This year's winners were Emanuele Rapetti and Lorenzo Cantoni from Universita della Svizzera Italiana in  Switzerland. Their paper is titled Reconsidering "Gen Y" & Co: From Minding the Gap to Overcoming it.

The decision of the jury was unanimously, and the laudation included the following statement:

In the Jury's judgement this paper is an excellent  contribution to the theme of the conference on „Open Learning Generations - Closing the Gap from Generation 'Y' to the Mature Lifelong Learners“ and it is best  in  presenting applicable and transferable results based on a solid methodological approach. The findings are critically discussed with references to the relevant literature and with creative ideas for further research.  

The EDEN AGM, new EC members and President's Report

The 21th EDEN Annual General Meeting was held Thursday June 7th in the Algandega Congress Centre in Porto.

The results from the election of officers are shown in the picture, and I congratulate the following new EC members who were elected at the meeting:

EDEN Welcome Reception with Fellow Awards

The EDEN Annual Conference started tonight with the welcome reception in the Noble Hall of Alfandega Congress Center.

During the reception, I had the pleasure of welcoming the delagates and handing over the diplomas to the new EDEN Fellows. The following are my notes for the welcome address and the laudation of the fellows:

Gratulerer til Dataforeningens nettverksgruppe Ung IT med gårsdagens nettverksmøte:  Digital markedsføring - Bli en vinner i digitale kanaler!

Styret i nettverksgruppen er i følge nettsidene dominert av studenter fra NITH - noe som gjør det hyggelig å tenke på at jeg for 30 år siden var med på å starte Datahøgskolen - som senere skiftet navn til DPH og NITH. Observante lesere vil raskt påpeke at jeg er alt for gammel til å delta på dette seminaret, men som president i EDEN er jeg opptatt av hvordan vi kan rekruttere unge forskere og forbedre de tjenestene vi har opprettet på blant annet Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin og Blogspot.


På tross av tropiske temperaturer i Oslo ble det et faglig interessant og godt møte på Lawo i Universitetsgata, og nedenfor kan dere lese noen av refleksjonene jeg gjorde under foredragene:
